My Musings for Christmas in 2020

If the weird and wild times of 2020 have taught us anything it’s that…

·       mankind is not superior; we as a collective are not immune to great upheaval

·       we cannot use so much of our energy + resources in relying on faraway lands for survival - instead we must look inwards + invest in the possibilities and genius of our own country and our local communities

It has also beautifully shown us that we are wired for connection.

For connection to our fellow humans and for connection to the sweet, magical and beautiful earth that is our home. This became so clear through social distancing, lockdown and reduced time in nature.

It is in connection that we thrive.

Last year, as Australia burned amid the most radical bushfire season our country has experienced to date, I softly suggested we support communities and wildlife affected when gifting at Christmas.

At this time I was so oblivious to the even more turbulent seas swirling just beyond the horizon.

But, despite the year gone by, my thoughts on gifting remain stronger than ever.

As we prepare to close the chapter on this strange and heavy year it is even more important to consider that Christmas, with all its wonderful energy, also comes with a darker side.

The good vibes take over, we lose sight of the essence of Christmas and buying gifts is done in gross, mindless excess. Christmas waste from unnecessary, unwanted, thoughtless gifts is insane. It’s consumerism at its ugliest.

Overseas companies of mass-produced, cheap, throwaway goods THRIVE while the health of our planet and the livelihood of our local communities SUFFER.

So, let us make the art of giving more beautiful this year. Let’s feel more connected to our land, to our people and to our fellow earth creatures.

Let’s not look beyond our shores this Christmas but look within our communities.

Buy AUSTRALIAN MADE or even more magical, LOCALLY MADE with a SUSTAINABLE ETHOS. Explore the businesses/artists/creators/designers from your local area and invest in them. The way you use your money has the power to cultivate happiness and support for your neighbours.

Let’s build a supportive community!

We have the chance this Christmas to turn the ugly of consumerism on its head and instead celebrate the beauty of community.
